Although Chile is mostly renowned for its striking landscapes, it’s also home to a host of varied and cultural cities. Each city offers something different, so I’ve hand-picked three of the best to see whilst you’re out there.

Santiago
Chile’s capital is bursting with energy and sophistication. Close to both beaches and ski resorts, Santiago offers many exciting things to see and do.
Firstly, it has a fantastic nightlife scene, much of which doesn’t get started until later on in the evening. So if it’s a party you’re looking for, you’ll likely find it here. It also has its fair share of historical monuments, museums, and winding streets you can spend hours exploring.
With the snow-capped Andes as its backdrop, you’ll also be able to experience some of the best fine dining in Chile. Remember to stop off at the Mercado Central market to watch the locals source their catch of the day (and find some of your own, too!).
La Serena
The capital of the Coquimbo region on Chile’s coastline, La Serena is known for its long, sandy beaches, making it one of the top beach destinations in the country.
Chile’s second oldest city (after Santiago) is home to many attractions, including 29 historical churches. The main cathedral is located in the city’s central square, Plaza de Armas, and displays a minimalist interior (unlike some other cathedrals!). Along the coastline, you can visit the Monumental Lighthouse La Serena, which has quite a different architectural style to the rest of the city’s buildings and has become a landmark of the area.
It’s also close to Elqui Valley, one of the best places in South America for stargazing. A place of natural beauty, the valley has more than 360 clear nights a year, making it a must-see for any night sky enthusiast. Catch this year’s total solar eclipse on the 2nd of July for a truly spectacular natural phenomenon.
Valparaíso
Valparaíso is a bohemian, UNESCO-protected city in Chile. It has seen its popularity grow over the years thanks to its coastal location, beautiful port, surrounding beaches, and colourful hilltop houses. It’s easy to get lost in the magic of this enchanting city.
Surrounded by rolling hills, it also offers incredible sea views (so it’s no wonder it’s referred to as the ‘Jewel of the Pacific’). Be sure to check out the beaches, including the popular Reñaca beach, which is known for its sunbathing and surfing culture. Kick back with a drink, watch the world go by at the port, and (if you can) time your visit to coincide with one of the city’s many carnivals for some added excitement.
