Whether you live north or south of the equator, chances are you’re well used to the layover. Those hours spent whiling away time in an airport that, really, could be anywhere in the world with the usual offerings of cafes, clothes shops and duty-free.

The bigger airports, like Singapore, are more fun, but it’s still hours of your life that you’d rather spend just getting there.

But when it comes to Singapore, why not change that layover into a stopover.

Singapore has a lot to offer and it’s well worth spending some time getting to know the island for a few days.

In this article we take a look at five good reasons to turn your hours into days and make Singapore a destination on your wishlist.

The Weather

Like much of this region there are rainy days, dry days and very rainy days but if there’s one thing you can guarantee about Singapore, it’s the heat.

If you’re looking to spend a few quality beach days then head to the East Coast or Changi beach for some seriously exotic views, white sand and a dip in the South China Sea.

If you’re looking for some entertainment on top of that, walk across to Sentosa island for busier beaches and more tourist attractions, such as the aquarium and water parks.

People

Singaporeans are friendly. They laugh a lot, are welcoming of visitors to their island and happy to chat about all things Singaporean.

Share a table with the locals at a food court and be impressed at the sheer number of languages the average Singaporean can speak. Get to know some of the local slang that you’ll hear in abundance, adding a layer of culture to your trip to the Lion City.

The Food

You can’t write about Singapore without mentioning the food. Food is life for Singaporeans and this is reflected in the amazing culinary offerings you’ll find around the island. From high-end restaurants to family favourites like Din Tae Fung you’ll find something for everyone’s palette and budget.

If you really want to eat like a Singaporean though, you need to visit a hawker centre.

These food courts are where street food stands come together. You’ll find classics like Hainanese chicken rice, nasi goreng and chilli crab and all for less than $5. Grab your food and a fresh juice, beer or traditional Singaporean coffee and find a table. You may end up sharing with a local or two or get lucky and find your own spot. At peak times you’ll find sharing is usually the easiest option.

If you want to try a more high-end Singaporean tradition then hit up the Sunday buffet. Many of the hotels offer a buffet with a mix of Asian and European food and you’ll spend a happy afternoon grazing next to many other Singaporean families who enjoy this Sunday tradition.

Tourism

There are so many things to see and do and a weekend just won’t cut it, but if you are there for just a few days here are just some of the must-see sights.

You’ve probably seen pictures of the famous Singapore skyline, complete with its surfboard style hotel and a building that looks like a flower opening.

This area of the city, called Marina Bay is a stunning place to visit and well worth a day in your itinerary. Spend the morning at the ArtScience Museum (the flower building) with its exciting galleries and interactive displays, perfect for all the family and even young children. Check what’s on before you arrive as the museum often holds special events for younger visitors.

Pop across to the high-end mall opposite for lunch before you make your way over to the Super Trees. These man made structures dominate the view and are far more than just alien-looking trees. They help to filter the air and are home to wildlife and greenery. Take a walk along the connecting aerial bridge for an incredible view.

Once you’ve explored the trees and if you’re in the mood for more nature then head to the domes. You’ll find entire biospheres with a huge variety of flora and fauna. After dinner in the famous Satay by the Bay hawker centre, it’s time to spend the evening listening to the Super Trees singing with their evening light and music show. A magical way to spend a day.

Transport

Get away from the heat of the day by travelling on the MRT train system. Reasonably priced, air conditioned and scrupulously clean, there really isn’t a better way to travel across this island city.

Alongside the city taxis there are also services like Uber so load up the app on your phone to give you a little more choice. Note that taxis do not require you to bring a child seat, while Uber and the like will ask you to bring your own. If you have a younger child, we recommend Mifold portable child car seats that can be stored in a backpack as you travel around.

This amazing city is fast paced, fun and packed full of hidden gems, ready to uncover. With so much of its colonial history still in evidence in the road systems, street names and structures it offers a fascinating glimpse into an incredibly modern city with a fascinating past.

Grab your Insure4less for affordable travel insurance and plan to spend a few days travelling around the island and its distinct neighbourhoods. Hit the East Coast for a relaxed beach vibe or throw yourself into the fun and games of Sentosa. Explore Marina Bay or uncover the French district in Serangoon Garden. Take a visit to Chinatown, Arab Street or Little India where cultures merge and there plenty of sights and food to explore.

Wherever you go, you’ll be glad you turned your layover into a stopover and uncovered Singapore and all it has to offer.
