Moving away from family is probably the number one factor that prevents people from emigrating.

There’s no easy way to say it.

Leaving loved ones behind, be it, parents, grandparents, brothers or sisters, while you and yours move far, far away to start a new life is tough.

But that’s not to say it’s impossible and that you shouldn’t do it.

Leaving Family Behind To Move Overseas

Waving goodbye at the airport. Moving away from family and friends

A Grandma Who Left Her Family Behind

As some of you might know, my family and I moved from the UK to New Zealand well over a decade ago.

I have talked endlessly about how we coped with raising kids in New Zealand without all of our family around us.

In this week’s show, we talk to Linda. Linda is my children’s Grandmother (my mummy).

Linda

Linda moved from the UK eleven years ago and has been enjoying life in New Zealand ever since.

But she left behind a son (my brother), four grandchildren, a sister, a brother and her aunt.

Linda tells us about the strategies she and her family have in place to help them all cope with being apart.

Listen to the podcast or watch the video to ease your fears

(and guilt) of moving away from your family to start your new life.

Why Move To New Zealand?

New Zealand is a wonderful place to raise kids, New Zealand food is delicious and diverse, and building a house in New Zealand is not something that is reserved for the super-rich.

New Zealand people are welcoming and easygoing, the weather is favourable, and recently, Auckland, New Zealand was voted the #1 place in the world to live

But there are a few scary things about New Zealand too—one of those being that it’s miles away from the rest of the world.
